New Developments in Junior Soccer for 2003

7th grade = 5 aside, with new rules see below.

8th grade =7 aside with max 3 subs

9 & 10th grades = 8 aside with max 3 subs

11th to Premier Youth = 11 aside with max 4 subs

Kicking off in 2K3

Junior Grades 10th  and below.

As you will be aware we are intending to play our soccer, at these levels, predominantly within development districts from this season. Details of your District and the Draw will be forwarded in due course, however there are some areas that your club should be working on well in advance.

Firstly 7th  grade will be played as a 5 a-side competition in all Districts this season with 8th grade to be the same next season (2004).

There are some Districts and individual clubs, that are keen to run both grades (5 aside) this season, that is fine by this office. The sooner all our youngsters start this way the better.

These games will be played under new rules with target (unmanned) goals. The goals should be no more than 1 metre high and between 1.5 metres and 1.8 metres wide. We are currently talking with manufacturers and suppliers pricing options.

Other details of pitch size, markings and rules will be sent out shortly.

Secondly we will be running SMALL WHITE development schools in each District for our 8- 10 year olds.

It is up to club coaches to identify~ the players in these ages that they feel warrant and will benefit from extra coaching. The appointed 'District Development Coach' will also be scouting for prospects. Clubs will still be able to run 'SMALL WHITES' Bronze certificate courses and prepare them for the Silver awards. The development schools will be there to offer extra coaching for our best prospects.

Thirdly when putting teams together in the 9th and 1Oth grades in particular, please look at the experience and ability of players. Teams should be assembled based on this criteria rather than age. The question is, can they compete technically and physically at this level?

It is of little benefit for players who have been working at their sport for 3 or 4 years to be joined by first time players. It becomes frustrating for them all.

Finally there will be a restriction on the number of players that each team can register from this season. Too many players in a squad mean problems for the coach and disgruntled players and parents.

The aim must be to give players the opportunity to get fill value for their sub with maximum time on the pitch.

We will endeavour to accommodate extra players by combining players from clubs in the same district to form extra teams.

Yours,

Fred Simpson

Inaugural Premier New for 2003 by Mainland Soccer

Premier 16's -2003

December 3rd  2002.

The following clubs have been selected to enter a team in the inaugural Premier Under-16 League. This is for players turning 16 in 2003 and younger.

Ferrymead Bays. Nomads (Western) Rangers (New Brighton)

Avon (Christchurch Utd.) Burnside Technical

Clubs have been selected on the basis of submissions received -historical & recent performance - potential player base -geographical position - existing structure - ability to provide facilities and fulfil requirements as per the circulated criteria.

These teams will be joined by combined club entries from:

 North Canterbury.

Mid Canterbury.

The clubs in the city will be required to accommodate top players currently playing at other clubs in their area.

Those clubs in brackets have already committed to supporting the entries along side them, for that we are very grateful. These clubs will receive similar support from this office.

All selections and appointments will be scrutinised by 'The Federation Coaching Director' and / or staff coaches. This includes both coaches and players.

Continued involvement in the Premier Leagues will be dependent on clubs following the outlined criteria and fully supporting the initiatives of Mainland Soccer.

Criteria for entry - Benefits - Expectations - Selection procedures will all be further discussed, in depth, at meetings with the clubs concerned.

These teams will be expected to contain the bulk of our top players within Canterbury, in the appropriate two-year age group. Exceptions will be players identified to play above this level and exceptional younger players identified by 'The Coaching Director' along with players electing to play outside of this competition.

It is anticipated that from this league the district 15th & 16th  grade squads will be predominantly selected.

Federation Development, 'Centre of Excellence' participants & ultimately Federation and National Academy Players should also be looking to play in these competitions.

As a final comment it has been very encouraging to learn of the cooperation between many junior clubs who see the overall development of players as a priority in our overall games development.

The negativity of the senior section of one particular club appears to have been the only stumbling block. Unfortunately their attitude has contributed to their club's exclusion from controlling any of these entries.
