7th Grade Whales (End of sesason report)

Thanks to an awesome team it’s been a pleasure to have coached this group of boys and watch them master skills, display excellent sportsmanship in all our games and to have the support of their parents. Much thanks also goes to Mark Barnes who was available most Saturdays to help coach the boys and referee games.
Goals scored this season -  Anthony & Thomas 7 each,  Benjamin – 4, John – 3, Jake & Mackenzie - 1 each, Charlie & Christopher were great on defence and getting the ball down the field.
Games: 9 Wins, 4 loses, 3 draws.

Player of the year: Anthony Sampson
Anthony’s shows wonderful control of the ball, participates well in the games played, displays good sportsmanship and has earnt the respect from the team of boys he never knew before the season started.
Most Improved player: Thomas Barnes
Thomas has good tackling skills and control of the ball. The first half of the season he often pushed himself so hard that most games were interrupted with knocks and injuries. Now he paces himself well, enjoys being part of the team and can participate as required throughout a whole game.

Shayne Kale (Coach)

This is the first season of soccer for most of the players and their coach and we are all enjoying the challenge and support a team sport can bring.Practices are lots of fun with lots of games to test everyones ball skills.
Games: 5 wins, 2 losses, 2 draws
Thanks to the parents who have been very supportive of the team and the many extended family members also joining us all to offer their encouragement as the team pursues the ball and tries utilising each other’s skills to get a goal.
Thanks to Mark Barnes for helping ref our Saturday games, and Nicole for her assistance with practices – this extra support is great for the boys.

Shayne Kale (Coach)

7th Grade Sharks  (End of sesason report)

This was our 1st season together and we started well. We won most of our games and had a number of drews. We had one loss for the season, score 2-1. Altogether it was a good learning curve for us. The team enjoyed playing together and we hope to be back next year.

  Coach  Andrew Lang

7th Grade Orcas (End of sesason report)

The team this year consisted of eight five year olds playing in the 7th grade.  Their stats were:

             Won                5            Drew               3            Lost

Out of all their games, there were only three games in which they didn’t score.  All players and parents had an outstanding season on and off the field and we look forward to another successful season next year.

Special mention goes to Joshua Primmer and Michael Leeder who equally had the highest goal count scoring 7 goals a piece.

Another special mention goes to their sponsor, Graeme Snook, South Island Manager of Mother Earth.

Player of the Year:               Joshua Primmer

Most Improved Player:            Jayden Watson

Highest Goal Scorer:            Joshua Primmer and Michael Leeder

By Glenn Lapslie

The Mighty Orcas were the little dynamos of the seventh grade for 2004, the boys are only five years old and from the beginning they showed a commitment to their training and a determination, which showed through on the field of play. The players although sometimes a lot smaller in size than some of their opponents never let this bother them in the slightest and competed on the level with most teams. A very impressive start to the season saw the team score 10 goals in their first five games but with only one victory and one draw, then an up turn in fortune and the boys won three and drew two of the next five, the later part of the season saw the boys lose their way with results winning only one of the last six games but the team as a whole produced some exciting football and a team spirit that also flourished away from the game. Special mention must go to our Player of the Season Joshua Primmer who has great speed and a good eye for goal. He also achieved the Coach's Award along with Michael Leeder for Top Goal scorer. Michael Leeder is a great attribute to any team for his all round ability and leadership and this showed in the encouragement he gave his fellow team mates, Our most improved Player of the Year was Jayden Watson who gave total commitment to each training session and game, he improved his tackling and passing techniques and will develop into a good player. A defensive strategy was not part of our plan this first season but strong tackling was and Luke Bennett, Josh Christensen and Benjamin Lapslie all have good qualities in this area, with Benj winning at least two games with goal line clearances and scoring two goals to boot. Ben Fisher-Robertson can also put the ball in the net and a long boot towards the opponent’s goal was always a help from Bradley Matheson. A thanks to Cameron Russell from the mini league who stepped in when players were unavailable. Thanks also to Tony Bennett for training the boys after school and to Glen Lapslie for being Co-Coach on alternate Saturdays. A special mention to Sheree and Julie for their organising and help in keeping control of Behind the scenes stuff, and last but not least a Big Thank You to all the parents who supported the team throughout the Year, I hope to see you all again next season.

   Cheers  Danny Leeder

8th

8th Grade Tigers

8th Grade Panthers   (End of sesason report)

The team this year consisted of four existing and four new players playing in the 8th grade.  Their stats were:

             Won                9             Drew               1            Lost                 6

All players and parents had an outstanding season on and off the field and we look forward to another successful season next year.

Special mention goes to Lewis Leeder who had the highest goal count scoring 18 goals.

Player of the Year:               Samuel Lapslie

Most Improved Player:            Matthew Cohr

Highest Goal Scorer:            Lewis Leeder

By Glenn Lapslie

The 7th grade Sharks from last season form the basis for this seasons 8th grade Panthers and after a good start last year were looking for a good performance to start this years campaign. The team didn't get off to the start they would have hoped with just one win and four losses coming in the first 5 games , but then with what seemed a complete turn around in their fortunes came three very good performances and three wins scoring 12 and conceding only 3, a brief loss of two games and a draw was the catalyst for the amazing end to a great season , the team won the last five games scoring 23 goals and letting their guard down only four times. The players of the Panthers all deserve to have special awards for the high standard of soccer that they have achieved this season, our Player of the Year  Samuel Lapslie is a very keen and good all round player, who has a natural ability to run the team from midfield ,who can get back and tackle in defence and a total of 9 goals shows he knows how to score. Our Most Improved Player goes to a player new to the team this year Matthew Cohr , he was a little shy but also a very good listener and would learn to move into positions around the park that often stopped attacking teams in their tracks. The only girl in our team Julia Dalrymple is a prodigy from the mini league who has the boys falling at her feet as she tackles them without a care ,and then stands over them as they pull themselves from the dirt. Two players that played much of the season at the back mainly due to their superior height and big kicking advantage were Michael Townshend and Jarrod Stoop each played a role in supplying our forwards with goals. Our striking partnership of Taylor Britt and Lewis Leeder was a pleasure to watch this year as they both seemed to be able to score at will, leaving many defences standing with their speed and good first time touches. As the goals went in the confidence could be seen throughout the rest of the team and the smiles on their faces told the story , The Coach's Award was presented to Lewis Leeder for a total of 18 goals and a close second on 15 goals was Taylor Britt. Once again it has been good to be part of a great team and Glen Lapslie and myself would like to thank the great support from all the parents each week ,keep coming its fun . Thanks to Julie and Sheree for all organizing, transport washing and oranges etc...

 Cheers Danny Leeder

8th Grade - Leopards (End of sesason report)

Despite a rocky patch near the start of the season where we lost 6 games in a row,the Lepoards finished the season in fine style, winning 5 and drawing 1 of our last 7 games. We finished with 6 wins,2 draws and 8 losses. It was exciting to see all our players showing great improvement from last years 7th grade side,it helped having kept the same team together.Special mention to Joe Brodie who again was our player of the year, scoring 12 goals.Joseph Durkin-Gorman,Andrew Hyde and Sheldon Isitt also stood out in a very good team effort, well done to all the Leopards! Hope to see you back next year.

 Cheers

Coach Geoff Hyde

9th Grade Eagles (End of sesason report)

Another fantastic year carrying on from the 2003 Tigers. What a difference a year makes! With many more wins than losses every team member can be extremely proud of their effort. Most pleasing was the personal growth in skills each and every player has shown, thanks to the parents for making the effort in getting the kids to Thursday training which was the key to the teams performance, building both skill levels and the team spirit. The kids enjoyed themselves and the results showed..great soccer!!.

Late in the season the persistence of both Reid Clements and Moya Whiting payed off with some great goals, well done you two!Time after time opposition attacks were halted by the brickwall defense of Jack Van Workum and Jordan Smith, congratulations on your awards guys.Plenty of goals again this season with Michael Bainbridge,Matthew Harley,Jordan Schimanski and Joshua Wright constantly popping them in.Josh great first season, well done.Special mention to Jack Rosvear who took over the captaincy role mid season and was often heard helping with the teams positional play, great season Jack! Riki Mace also new to the game made a great effort with just rewards coming late in the season..keep at it Riki.

Special thanks to all that supported the Eagles, often lifting the team with your side line performance. We look forward to seeing all next year, same time same place

Cheers Graeme Harley and Tony Smith..Coaches.

10th Grade Bobcats    (End of sesason report)

Team Members:  Myles Cameron, Robert Passe, Georgia Leonard, Matt Watts, Maddy George, Scott Tynan, Kieran McCann, Nathan Hight, Brooke Queree, Toby Tainui, Te-Tua Tainui.

For a brand new team, this season has been both challenging and very rewarding. Some players had  never played soccer before and most had only played for one season. Yet from the first game each and every team member played with passion and commitment. For our 16 games, we won 7, drew 3 and lost 6 ( mostly by a very narrow margin). Early in the season we lost 2 very good players, brothers Toby and Te Tua, who moved to the North Island. Te Tua played mainly in mid-field and was great on attack. Toby was our specialist goalie who made many brilliant and brave saves. Obviously with our squad of 10 reduced to 8 it could have been very challenging. However we gained a British import, Robert, who proved himself to be an extraordinary defender. Our strong centre, Myles, then changed to become goalie and impressed everybody with his expertise including his huge kicks which helped set up many fine goals. Helping  Robert in defence was Scott who proved to be a determined player in his first season of soccer and gained in confidence and skills as the season progressed. His dad Mark helped out by refereeing most games ( and very well I must say ) taking alot of pressure off the coach. Playing in mid-field on the left was Nathan who in his first year of playing ended up slotting 7 great goals and setting up many more. His skills were superb and he finished the season on a high winning the player of the year trophy. On the right mid-field were Georgina and Brooke who displayed great versatility by playing in other positions when asked. Georgina had many fine runs and set up many goals for the strikers. Brooke was also excellent in his positional play and grew in strength in his defensive abilities. Playing most of the season at centre was Kieran who was especially good at his strong tackling and often displayed great speed around the pitch. Up front on the right was Matt who was especially good at his positional play and set up many goals with his magnificent crosses. Playing at left forward was Maddy who always had a high work-rate and was impressive with his elusive dribbling techniques. As the top goal scorer with a tally of 14 it was deserving that he was awarded the most improved player trophy. Finally, thanks to each player for playing as a great team member and we look forward to seeing you all next season.

Coach Barry George

10th grade Jaguars

The 10th grade Jaguars have started the season with half the team from the 9th grade Crows which had been together for three years. The other half of the team were selected for the premier team and well deserved selections too. So we started the season with Ben Casey, Tommy Crow ,  James Leeder, Luke Geeves, Alexander Taylor from the Crows. Bradley Roe came from an Avonhead  team with Kevin Kim , James Clifford , Courtney Holland having there first winter playing soccer.

What a nice group of young people keen as mustard to play soccer our main goal has been to have fun and play as a team which is going very well. We have a great bunch of supporters that regularly come to watch and support. The team has fitted into their positions really well and improving with every game. We are all very proud of them and all are improving there skills.

The results so far are 5 wins 3 losses 1 draw. The Jaguars have scored 26 goals and had 13 against them top goal scores are Bradley and Ben on eleven each. Thanks to Peter, Maureen, and Adrian for their help so far.

Coach Gary Geeves.

10th grade Cheetahs

The 10th Grade Cheetahs are enjoying a successful season already and have had some exciting games , notably the Hornby Eels game  (3-3 )on the 5th which  had everyone biting theit nails until the final whistle and also the
Avonhead Puma game (6-1) on the 12th .The team is in its 4th year together .There is a feeling of cameradarie that the guys enjoy  and it is evident on the field ,very supportive , honest with their calls and excellent
sportsmanship .The boys have also made Kate welcome .We unfortunately  lost Alex Doe to the 10th premier team , however Kate Adams has replaced him and is an assett to the team , playing couragously in
the forwards and midfield and helped set up a goal just last week .The team is doing the basics well ,good passing ,communicating well and stong shots at goal as well as a very strong defence .The Cheetahs have up
to now :  played    8  won       5 drawn     2  lost         1
goals scored  25 and  19 against
Our forwards have provided some exciting combinations and scoring opportunities .Nathan Campbell has scored 11 goals this season followed by Liam with 6 and Nick and Braedyn on 4 each  , also Cameron with 3,well done guys !
Our defence consists of Tim Jamison ,Ryan DeLeijer Rhodes ,and Connor Hoffman who have shown real commitment especially under pressure ,good tackles and clearance kicks. Braedyn Campbell has enjoyed midfield play
along with Stephen Collins . Both boys having a sizzling season with  very distinctive styles and supporting forwards and defence well . Generally however the team has really improved and we are looking forward to the rest
of the season . Our players mum's ,dads and grandparents  have been hugely supportive and
are always encouraging .Its always neat to see every one at the games and the kids love having them there.  Thanks especially to Paul Hoffman for his help at training .

From the very start of the season it was evident that we had a very good and well balanced team. For most players this was the 3rd season together in the A Team. Everyone was keen to play well and also enjoy themselves.  It is interesting to note that many of the players are friends of the pitch and atay over at each others homes both during and between seasons. So as you can probably guess we have had a reasonably successful season. We have played 12 games, won 6, lost 5 and drawn 1.

TEAM

Game statistics for the season were goals for 54, against 21, difference + 33. By our calculations we think we came 4th in the Round Robin competition.

Every week the team was supported by a large number of parents, grand parents and siblings. The individual skills, hunger for the ball, and willingness to pass provided us all with many memorable moments. Because the players all seem to connect and support each other so well any where on the pitch we often forgot they are only 13. Many parents also helped with training, coaching, ‘subbing’ and refereeing

In the final of the Knock Out competition the boys played extremely well in a game that used every ‘mm’ of the pitch and could have gone either way right up to the final whistle. The final score was 3-2 to Ferrymead Bays with all players absolutely exhausted. This team may not have won the Knock Out Competition 2 years in a row but the boys can hold their heads high because they competed for everything and contributed to great finals game. We were also proud of the way the boys congratulated the winning team.

Congratulations to Team Player of the year Jack Nash for way he controlled the midfield and fed the ball to the forwards and to Most Improved Player Kyle Osborne for his strong defence and for ‘knowing’ when to carry  the ball and when to release it.

Congratulations and thank you to every player for your great skills, attitude and behaviour. We are very proud of you and appreciate what you do. See you next season.

Nomads/ Western  16th grade Premier youth ( End of season report)

This team was very late in being formed, with the team being named only 2 weeks before the season started. It was made up of players from over six different 2003 teams. Our team had no “named” players as those players had already been taken by other clubs in the competition, with some clubs forming their team as early as February. A lesson the two clubs should learn from.

Our lack of time together showed up very quickly when the competition started. The team made progress and very nearly forced a draw in round five and had its first win in round seven. By this stage we had conceded over 40 goals while scoring 10 goals.

The second half of the season was harder on the team as a series of injuries and sickness hit us. The team members stayed positive and were learning lots from the games. When we had our 14th loss from 15 games the team sprit was finally broken and we had to default the last two games of the season.

I must congratulate the boys on their determination to play soccer in very trying conditions. I wish them all the best for their futures.
